Kingsmere Community Association
Newsletter.
Open evening 15/2/08 7-9pm Conqueror
Hall.
Over the past
year the Kingsmere Community Association has worked very hard to bring
you some new ventures, some great events and to work with the landlords,
councillors, county councillors, police and even Asda to try and improve
life on Kingsmere.
Remember last
years Easter Parties, Green Day or the Ten Year Anniversary event? All
brought to you by the KCA.
The new Saturday
morning film club and the Youth Club for young people of 11+ are all run
and supported by KCA volunteers.
We are always
looking for more young people from the estate to come and join the
developing youth clubs in the hall. To reassure parents thinking of
suggesting their children come along, all KCA volunteers are CRB checked
and receive professional support and training from the Youth Development
Service. All our activities are fully insured and run in accordance with
policies and systems approved by the Youth Development Service.
We have tried to
make better use of the local community hall for the benefit of residents
as well as raising over £9,500 in funding for the youth club thanks to
Rural Sussex and IT suite thanks to Amicus Horizon. We have just applied
for a further grant of over £7,000 for the film club so fingers crossed!
This is often a
thankless task but a dedicated group of residents continue to give up
their free time to keep on providing.
We will once
again be having the ‘MAP.’
For those who didn’t attend last time, this is where we display a large
map of the estate and provide coloured dots for you to highlight problem
areas such as ASB, Dog fouling and speeding cars etc. This map is then
passed to the various partners such as the council, police and landlords
to act upon.
Representatives
from the Neighbourhood Partnership will be at the KCA open evening to
answer your questions (and listen to your complaints!) along side KCA
members.
THIS
IS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY!
If you would like to meet the KCA
members, volunteer to help or join please come to Conqueror Hall, Harold
Drive at 7pm on Friday 15/2/08

Computer Suite:
Having secured an award of
funding from Amicus Horizon to the tune of £5,840 the KCA is
pleased to announce that the IT suite will be opening in
early March 2008. We have, with the help of Julie Gratton,
been very lucky to secure a highly qualified teacher, Saskia
Luppenga to teach basic computer skills to adults and to run
a homework club for young people. These will take place on
Fridays with support from KCA members.
We also hope to have
wireless internet services and possibly some laptops for the
ground floor of the hall, funding permitting. All the PC’s
will be upgraded before the courses start. To view the IT
suite and for full details of the courses please come and
meet Saskia at the KCA open meeting on the 15/2/08, 7pm at the hall. |

Buddies youth club
for the 11+ age group is currently run on Wednesdays from
6.30 to 8.30pm. The club has proved so successful the KCA is
now planning to open a second night of the week! We are
applying for funding for ‘Buddies 2’ as it will be known and
should be in a position to open by late February 2008. For
full details come to the open evening, meet some of the
volunteers and find out what activities will be on offer.
Both clubs have a tuck shop open at very reasonable prices. |
|
 |
The film club
runs on a Saturday, doors open 10.45am, film starts 11am.
Just like the old ‘Saturday morning pictures’ many of us
remember we do break part way through the film to open the
tuck shop. Entry is FREE, just bring a little money for
tuck! All funds raised from the tuck shops are ploughed back
into the film and youth club.
To keep the club
interesting and to give the young people a break we have
decided that on the last Saturday of each month we will have
a Saturday Fun Club instead of a film. Come to the open
evening to find out more or pick up a membership form! |
|
 |
Junior Youth Club:
The KCA is currently
negotiating with Kings Church to bring the community a
junior youth club to run for two hours on a Tuesday.
Negotiations, funding, volunteers and insurance permitting
this should also be open by early Spring. |
|

|
SOCIAL EVENINGS:
We are soon to launch a
social evening for Adults only at the hall where you can
play pool, darts, Nintendo Wii and socialise. The kitchen
will be open for light refreshments. We would like to open
this on a Friday evening but please do come to the open
evening and let us know what you think! We can go on to hold
events of your choice such as Bingo, Race Nights or Themed
party nights but only if you tell us WHAT YOU WANT! |
|

|
LEARN TO JIVE:
Always wanted to be able
to get on that dance floor and Jive? Let us know, we are in
a position to be able to offer Swing Jive lessons for those
interested.
Come and meet the
‘Jivers’ at the open evening!

SHOPPING TROLLEYS
ASDA, the KCA and the
partnership have worked very hard to try to bring about an
end to the abandoned trolleys on Kingsmere. However, despite
the considerable improvement over the last few months, a
small number of residents are still using trolleys and
leaving them abandoned on our estate. PLEASE think carefully
about doing this, as they are unsightly and potentially
dangerous to both cars and pedestrians. Also Eastbourne
Borough Council have begun fining ASDA £175 for each trolley
found on the estate, so ASDA are now considering court
action against the few remaining persistent offenders! |
